Denmark agriculture faces production risks from new fertilizer laws

Agricultural advisors at Spiras warn that new fertilizer legislation in Denmark could significantly hinder the production of specific crops, including peas, rapeseed, and broad beans.

According to Carsten Clausen Kock, head of plant cultivation at Spiras, these crops are particularly important because they leave nutrients in the soil. Tightening nitrogen emission requirements may make it economically unviable for farmers, especially those on the east coast, to continue cultivating them.

The potential reduction in domestic production could lead to increased imports of rapeseed for diesel and soy for protein, as peas and broad beans are vital alternatives for reducing meat consumption.
