Landbrug & Fødevarer challenges Danish pig production ban

The industry organization Landbrug & Fødevarer (L&F) has issued a formal response to the Danish government's proposal to implement a temporary halt on the establishment and expansion of conventional pig production. L&F argues that the government lacks the necessary legal authority under the Livestock Housing Act to implement such an intervention via executive order, noting that the act is intended to protect nature and the environment rather than regulate animal welfare.

L&F has warned that if the temporary ban, which is intended to take effect on October 26, is implemented, the agricultural sector may be forced to pursue legal action to seek compensation for economic losses. The organization criticized the fact that the stop was effectively announced via press release on September 23, several days before the legal basis was submitted for consultation. Christian Fink Hansen, sector director for pigs, has called for an economic impact assessment to avoid significant uncertainty within the industry.
