Denmark alcohol studies highlight family impact and low treatment awareness
New research in Denmark highlights the significant social and psychological toll of alcohol abuse on families. A Voxmeter survey conducted for Alkohol & Samfund reveals that more than one in three Danes have experienced physical, mental, or social consequences due to the drinking habits of someone they know.
Reported impacts include increased anxiety, depression, loneliness, and isolation. Over half of those affected noted that alcohol problems led to conflicts or arguments, while 7.7 percent reported experiencing violence. Experts emphasize that children and spouses are particularly vulnerable groups facing high levels of stress.
Simultaneously, awareness of available support remains low. A separate Voxmeter study for Blå Kors Danmark shows that only 25.1 percent of Danes are aware that they are entitled to free alcohol treatment with a 14-day guarantee. This represents a decline from previous years. Organizations are calling for better communication regarding these services to ensure individuals and families can seek help earlier, as the Danish Health Authority estimates it takes an average of 11 years for those with alcohol problems to seek treatment.
