Denmark and Greenland reject Trump's claims of permanent US control

Denmark and Greenland have rejected claims made by US President Donald Trump that a new security agreement grants the United States ‘permanent control’ over Greenland. While the agreement is expected to expand the US military role in the strategically significant Arctic territory, officials emphasized that the arrangement does not transfer territorial sovereignty.

President Trump stated on Truth Social that the deal provides the US with “permanent control over security, and all other needs, in Greenland” and ensures Washington’s ability to defend the territory “FOREVER.” He also noted that hostile powers would be prohibited from establishing military bases or making sensitive investments in the region without US approval.

In response, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen stated the agreement respects the Danish Kingdom’s “red lines.” Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen added that the arrangement recognizes Greenland’s territorial integrity and its right to self-determination, asserting that the territory is “not for sale.”
