Denmark announces pig production moratorium and student grant cuts
The Danish government has announced several significant policy changes affecting agriculture and student welfare. Regarding the agricultural sector, a temporary moratorium on new or expanded pig production was announced on September 23, 2026. However, the organization Bæredygtigt Landbrug has raised concerns regarding the legal basis for this stop, noting that the official decree does not take effect until October 26, 2026. The group argues that authorities lack the legal authority to suspend current applications before the new regulations are active and has urged farmers to submit applications immediately to secure their legal standing.
In terms of social welfare, the government's new budget proposal includes significant cuts to student grants (SU) for cohabiting students. While initial plans targeted students whose parents earned more than 710,000 DKK annually, the new proposal introduces a tapering system for families earning as little as 420,000 DKK. Under this plan, students in the affected income bracket could see their monthly grants reduced from 1,154 DKK to just 500 DKK.
