Denmark approves floating solar PV research project
Denmark has approved a three-year research project to test floating photovoltaic (PV) technologies in the Roskilde Fjord. The Danish Energy Agency granted permission to the engineering firm COWI and the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) to install and evaluate three different systems near the DTU Risø Campus.
The project aims to determine the technical performance, environmental impact, and economic viability of marine-based solar power under Danish sea conditions. The three pilot installations will have a combined capacity of approximately 115 kW and cover a total area of roughly 920 square meters. The systems will utilize both monocrystalline PERC and heterojunction (HJT) solar modules.
To facilitate comparison, the project will feature technologies from three different companies: HelioRec of France, SINN Power of Germany, and Sunlit Sea of Norway. The agency determined that these specific pilot installations do not require an environmental impact assessment. The research will also examine factors such as energy yield, corrosion, material degradation, and maintenance requirements.
