Denmark bicycle thefts decline in volume but rise in value

Reported bicycle thefts in Denmark are declining in volume, but the value of stolen goods is increasing. Data from Statistics Denmark, analyzed by Codan Forsikring, shows that reported thefts fell from 48,326 in 2023 to 44,043 in 2025, an 8.9 percent decrease. This downward trend has continued into the first half of 2026.

Despite the lower number of incidents, the average insurance payout has risen by 11.4 percent during the same period. This shift indicates that thieves are increasingly targeting high-value models, specifically electric bikes, racing bikes, and gravel bikes. Mathias Kjær Sigvaldason, VP of Home Insurance at Codan, noted that thieves are focusing on models that are easy to resell and hold the highest value.

According to the insurance company, electric bikes are frequently stolen from the street, whereas racing and gravel bikes are more often taken during burglaries of garages, sheds, or basements. Even with the decline in total thefts, approximately 120 bicycles are still stolen daily in Denmark.
