Denmark biomass combustion to continue for decades

A hearing from the Danish Energy Agency reveals that biomass combustion will continue at Danish combined heat and power plants for decades. Despite political promises and criticism from the Climate Council, two-thirds of Denmark's renewable energy consumption currently stems from biomass burned at over 150 district heating plants across the country.

At the Amagerværket plant, biomass-fired blocks provide significant capacity, including AMV1, which uses wood pellets to produce 250 MW of heat and 68 MW of electricity, and AMV4, which uses wood chips to produce 400 MW of heat and 150 MW of electricity. These facilities supply district heating to several municipalities, including Copenhagen, Gentofte, Gladsaxe, Tårnby, and Frederiksberg.
