Denmark blocks 98 unlicensed gambling websites including Polymarket

The Danish Gambling Authority (Spillemyndigheden) has received court approval from the Frederiksberg Court to block 98 unlicensed gambling websites operating in Denmark. Among the targeted platforms is the US-based prediction market Polymarket.

The regulator identified that these websites specifically targeted Danish citizens by utilizing Danish-language content, local currency, the Danish flag, and domestic payment options. Minister for Taxation and Growth Jakob Engel-Schmidt criticized the platforms, stating that human tragedies and wars should not be used as subjects for speculation.

To implement the restrictions, authorities will use DNS blocking, which redirects users attempting to access the sites to a page informing them of the illegality of the service. This action brings the total number of blocked websites in Denmark to 870 since 2012. However, some reports suggest that the effectiveness of DNS blocking may be limited as operators can quickly switch to new domains.
