Denmark cancer patient pays 750,000 DKK for private treatment

In Denmark, patients face significant dilemmas regarding access to the latest cancer medications. While cancer treatment is officially free, many new drugs are rejected or delayed by the Medicines Council (Medicinrådet) based on assessments of whether their effectiveness justifies their cost.

Henrik Lassen, a 65-year-old patient with esophageal cancer, has personally paid 750,000 DKK for private intravenous treatments after the public healthcare system could no longer offer him new options. He described the situation as ‘utterly unfair,’ noting that some of the treatments he purchased had not yet been approved by the Medicines Council, while others were rejected due to insufficient documentation of their effectiveness. For patients like Lassen, paying for private care is a means to gain more time, even when a cure is not possible.
