Denmark celebrates midsummer Sankt Hans with bonfires and music

On June 23, the town of Attrup on Denmark’s Limfjord held its annual Sankt Hans celebration. A bonfire was lit at 20:00 after a sermon by priest Kristian Gram Schjoldager, followed by performances from local musicians Petra Westra and Per Iversen and communal singing of midsummer songs. Attendees also enjoyed freshly made waffles.

Sankt Hans, the Danish midsummer festival, originates from ancient solstice rites that were later linked to Saint John the Baptist. Across Denmark it is marked by large bonfires, folk songs, and gatherings that are believed to ward off evil spirits. The tradition is celebrated on the evening of June 23, often accompanied by food, drink and local customs such as flower wreaths for livestock.
