Denmark: Child violence costs society 10.6 billion DKK annually

A new analysis reveals that violence against children costs Danish society at least 10.6 billion DKK per year. These expenses are distributed across the social services, healthcare, employment, and justice sectors.

In response, the partnership ‘Barndom Uden Vold’ (Childhood Without Violence) is calling for increased adult vigilance. The organization, which includes over 40 authorities and organizations, emphasizes that physical and psychological violence can lead to long-term issues such as anxiety, depression, stress, trauma, and low self-esteem.

Local municipalities, including Thisted and Skive, have voiced their support for the initiative. Officials note that one in six children in Denmark experiences violence at home. Because many children do not report their experiences themselves, authorities are urging adults to act on concerns to ensure children receive help before problems escalate.
