Denmark citizen proposal on wastewater reaches 50,000 supporters

A Danish citizen proposal titled ‘Discharge of untreated wastewater into rivers, streams, fjords and seas’ has reached the required 50,000 supporters to be formally presented in the Folketinget. The proposal includes four key points, such as installing meters on more overflows across Denmark to ensure discharge data is publicly accessible.

The initiative has drawn political attention, with Venstre Member of Parliament Amanda Heitmann expressing strong support for improving the marine environment. However, the proposal has also faced criticism from Socialdemokratiet, with political spokesperson Rasmus Stoklund questioning the consistency of support given previous votes regarding fertilization laws intended to protect water environments.
