Denmark creates new wolf control zone after wolf approaches children in West Jutland

A wolf in West Jutland approached children playing in private gardens in the town of Nørre Nebel on 5 August, in three separate incidents. The animal was not aggressive but did not retreat despite shouting or clapping, prompting the Ministry of Nature and Animal Welfare to deem the behaviour unacceptable.

Minister Christian Rabjerg Madsen announced the establishment of a new regulation zone extending from Nørre Nebel to Hvide Sande, allowing private landowners and the Danish Nature Agency (Naturstyrelsen) to obtain permits to shoot the problem wolf. The zone links to an existing one near Oksbøl, where similar wolves have been observed. Thermal drones will be deployed to locate the animal, and the Nature Agency has begun patrolling the area with rifles.

The move follows earlier incidents, including a 14‑year‑old girl being followed by a wolf in Oksbøl in January and a wolf filmed on a golf course in July. The new zone aims to prevent further human‑wildlife interactions and enable rapid response if the wolf reappears.
