Denmark delays update on chips‑bag recycling guidance

In Denmark there is ongoing confusion over how to dispose of chips bags. The Danish Environmental Protection Agency (Miljøstyrelsen) still advises that chips bags belong in residual waste unless a different instruction is printed, while manufacturers such as Kims have introduced new bags that can be recycled as plastic. Industry representatives, including Christina Busk, environmental policy chief for Plastindustrien, have urged the agency to revise its guidance, saying, “I would clearly recommend that the Environmental Agency makes the recommendation so we can recycle more chips bags.”

Miljøstyrelsen acknowledges the need for an update. Chief consultant Jette Bjerre Hansen said the agency is aware that “some points need an update, and we will look at it.” The agency’s current sorting guideline (No. 9793 of 01/07/2022) still lists chips bags under residual waste, but notes that it is a recommendation, not a mandatory rule, allowing municipalities to advise differently. The agency is reviewing the matter amid concerns about green‑washing and the lack of clear labeling on packaging.
