Denmark Deploys Conscripts to Greenland for Arctic Exercise

Denmark will send a company of conscript soldiers to Greenland in August to take part in the Arctic Endurance exercise. The conscripts, the first cohort to complete the new eleven‑month service, have finished five months of basic training in Haderslev and will carry out tasks such as surveillance, winter training and joint drills with allied forces. Defence Minister Jeppe Bruus said the deployment strengthens security, deterrence and the Danish Armed Forces’ capability to operate in harsh Arctic conditions.

The move expands Denmark’s defence presence in the territory, where about 300 professional soldiers are currently stationed and numbers are expected to rise to 1,000 this year. Deployment of conscripts is part of Operation Arctic Endurance and aims to bolster sovereignty protection and NATO capabilities amid heightened geopolitical interest in the High North. While some critics voice concerns over the social and environmental impact of a larger military footprint, officials argue the step is necessary to address Arctic security gaps.
