Denmark deploys troops to Greenland amid migration crisis and U.S. territorial threats

Denmark has deployed military troops to Greenland as part of the Arctic Endurance exercise and NATO’s Arctic Sentry mission. This deployment aims to strengthen Arctic defenses and reinforce Danish presence in the region following repeated threats from U.S. President Donald Trump regarding the potential annexation of the territory.

Simultaneously, Greenland is facing a massive humanitarian crisis. Approximately 30,000 people, including many families and unaccompanied minors, have arrived by sea from the United States. The influx has overwhelmed local hospitals, housing, and social services in a region with a total population of fewer than 57,000. Many arrivals are seeking asylum, citing a lack of opportunity and basic services in their home country.

While President Trump has denied direct government involvement in the mass arrival of vessels, he has continued to assert historical U.S. rights over Greenland. The Danish government has convened emergency meetings to address the dual challenges of territorial security and the humanitarian needs of the migrants.
