Denmark discovery: Largest Viking Age silver hoard unearthed
A homeowner in Denmark has discovered what is being declared the largest known Viking Age silver hoard in the country's history. While preparing ground for a new patio, the individual unearthed approximately 18.5 kilograms (40.7 pounds) of silver treasure.
The hoard contains roughly 700 objects and fragments, including silver ingots, bracelets, coins, a small Thor’s hammer, and various pieces of cut silver. About 320 of these items remained within the original clay vessel used to bury them, while the rest were scattered in the surrounding soil. This find is approximately three times the size of the previous record-holding Terslev hoard.
Archaeologists from the North Jutland Museums believe the collection dates to the 10th century. This estimation is supported by the presence of two Anglo-Saxon silver pennies minted under King Edward the Elder. One artifact features runes that may translate to ‘hutu’, potentially signifying a name or mark of ownership. The discovery suggests the local area was a significant hub for Viking Age economy and trade networks.
