Denmark discovery: Largest Viking silver hoard found in Rebild
A homeowner in Rebild, Denmark, has discovered the largest Viking Age silver hoard ever found in the country while preparing to install a new garden terrace. The find consists of approximately 700 objects and fragments weighing roughly 18.5 kilograms (40 pounds).
The collection includes silver bars, bracelets, jewelry, 47 coins or coin fragments, and a small pendant shaped like Thor’s hammer. Archaeologists noted that about 320 of the items were found inside a clay vessel, while the remaining pieces were scattered in the surrounding soil.
Torben Sarauw, head of cultural heritage at North Jutland Museums, stated that the hoard provides rare insight into the Viking silver economy, where silver served as both coinage and weighed bullion for trade and wealth accumulation. The discovery is nearly three times larger than the previous record-holder, the Terslev Hoard, which weighed approximately 6.5 kilograms. Experts believe the items were buried around the tenth century during a period of significant political and religious transition in Denmark.
