Denmark elections result in fragmented parliament without majority
Denmark's recent parliamentary elections have resulted in a fragmented Folketing, with no single political bloc securing the 90 seats required for an absolute majority. The left-wing bloc holds 84 seats, while the right-wing bloc holds 77. The centrist Moderaterne party, led by former Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, holds 14 seats and is expected to play a decisive role in future government formation.
The election results were challenging for the outgoing coalition. The Social Democrats, led by Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, won the most seats but suffered their worst electoral performance since 1903. Similarly, the liberal Venstre party, the largest in the right-wing bloc, also recorded its poorest historical result.
Political attention is also focused on the four seats representing Greenland and the Faroe Islands. These North Atlantic mandates could potentially tip the balance of power in the 179-seat chamber, similar to the 2022 elections where they contributed to a left-wing majority.
