Denmark electricity prices hit four-year high in August
Electricity prices in Denmark reached their highest levels in nearly four years during August. According to energy companies OK and Norlys, the average price was approximately 120 øre per kWh, nearly double the typical summer rate.
Several factors contributed to this surge. Geopolitical instability in the Middle East, specifically regarding the Strait of Hormuz, led to high natural gas prices. Additionally, extreme heatwaves across Europe increased electricity demand for cooling, while low water levels in rivers forced several nuclear power plants to operate at reduced capacity.
In West Denmark (DK1), the price was recorded at 0.94 kr/kWh, while East Denmark (DK2) saw prices of 0.95 kr/kWh. These figures represent a significant increase from July levels and mark the highest average prices since the energy crisis in December 2022.
