Denmark environmental authorities criticized for poor mariculture oversight
The Danish National Audit Office (Rigsrevisionen) has issued sharp criticism regarding the management and oversight of mariculture and agricultural pesticide use by environmental authorities.
In a report concerning the 19 mariculture sites in Denmark, the Ministry of Environment's administration of permits and supervision was described as 'very unsatisfactory.' The audit highlighted that due to prolonged processing times, some mariculture operations are still functioning under permits issued in the 1990s. Furthermore, all 19 sites were found to have violated laws or permit conditions in 342 separate instances between 2018 and 2025, with the Environmental Protection Agency enforcing only 30 of these violations.
Additionally, the audit labeled the Environmental Protection Agency's control over pesticide use in agriculture as 'strongly unsatisfactory.'
