Denmark evaluates Airbus A400M acquisition for Arctic transport
Denmark is considering the acquisition of four to five Airbus A400M Atlas transport aircraft to replace its aging fleet of four C-130J Hercules. While a formal decision has not been announced by the Danish government, the potential shift is driven by the logistical challenges of operating in the Arctic and North Atlantic. The A400M offers greater capacity for heavy and bulky loads in remote northern locations, a capability demonstrated during French Air and Space Force trials on Greenlandic ice and snow in 2025 and 2026.
In addition to aircraft procurement, Airbus Defence and Space has entered into a cooperation agreement with the Danish innovation center CenSec. This partnership aims to integrate Danish companies and research institutions into European defense aviation programs, specifically the A400M and A330 MRTT. This industrial engagement follows Denmark’s involvement in NATO’s Multi-Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) fleet initiative.
Other potential competitors for the replacement contract include the Embraer C-390 Millennium and updated C-130J models. Previous attempts to acquire the A400M in 2015 were stalled due to concerns regarding excessive capacity and high maintenance costs, but evolving operational requirements in Greenland may alter the current strategic calculus.
