Denmark extends border controls with Germany until May 2027
Denmark has announced a six-month extension of temporary border controls at its frontier with Germany. Justice Minister Nicolai Wammen confirmed that the measures, which were originally scheduled to expire on November 11, will now remain in place until May 11, 2027.
The decision is based on what authorities describe as a serious security situation involving ongoing threats of terrorism and sabotage. The Danish Ministry of Justice also cited the migration crisis in Ceuta as a factor, noting that the influx of tens of thousands of migrants from Morocco into the Spanish enclave in July demonstrated how rapidly large groups of people can move.
While the Schengen Agreement generally prohibits internal border checks, temporary controls are permitted under specific conditions. Germany has also maintained stationary controls at the Danish border since September 2024.
