Denmark faces new transport regulations and e-bike compliance risks

New regulatory changes and compliance risks are affecting drivers and transport companies in Denmark.

GF Forsikring has warned that many electric bike owners may be unknowingly operating illegal vehicles. Certain models, particularly fat-bikes purchased cheaply from abroad, can be adjusted to exceed the legal 25 km/h limit. If a bike is classified as a motor-driven vehicle rather than a standard e-bike, owners may find themselves without coverage from home or liability insurance, potentially facing millions in damages if an accident occurs.

Additionally, new EU regulations have come into effect regarding commercial transport. As of July 1, vans weighing over 2.5 tons used for international freight are now subject to the same driving and rest time rules as heavy trucks. This requires the installation of tachographs and speed recorders, a move that industry actors fear will increase bureaucracy and administrative workloads for transport companies.
