Danish government to strengthen school leisure activities

The Danish government has announced plans to strengthen leisure activities for children by investing in school leisure clubs (SFOs) and youth clubs. The initiative aims to provide more activities, extended opening hours, and new playgrounds. A pilot program will also be launched in selected municipalities to allow children to attend leisure centers through the 6th grade, rather than the current limit of the 3rd grade.

Minister for Children and Education Magnus Heunicke stated that this is an investment in children's well-being and social communities. Approximately five billion kroner have been allocated for initiatives in the child and school sectors leading up to 2030.

In Odense, local authorities are already implementing similar measures to improve the school day. At Sct. Hans Skole, students can participate in organized activities during breaks, such as board games, chess, and film workshops, to foster social interaction and reduce feelings of insecurity during recess.
