Denmark faces rising drug-impaired driving concerns

Drug-impaired driving is a growing concern in Denmark, particularly among young people obtaining driver's licenses. Addiction therapists and driving instructors report that students often have traces of substances like cocaine or cannabis in their blood during driving lessons, even if they do not feel intoxicated. Experts from the Road Safety Council warn that residual substances can impair reaction times and cause drivers to miss critical cues like pedestrians or yield signs.

In the South and South Jutland police district, drug-impaired driving remains a significant issue, ranking as the third highest in the country for charges in 2025. In response, political figures such as Frederik Bloch Münster of the Conservative Party have proposed stricter penalties. The proposal includes reclassifying all drug-impaired driving as 'reckless driving,' which would allow for harsher punishments including prison sentences and vehicle confiscation.
