Denmark faces rising risks of hidden building damage from cloudbursts

Increasing cloudburst frequency in Denmark is raising the risk of hidden moisture and water damage in buildings. The Teknologisk Institut warns that the most severe damage often develops after the water has receded, as moisture penetrates behind walls, under floors, and into insulation.

According to Forsikring & Pension, nearly 12,000 water damage claims were reported to Danish insurance companies following cloudbursts in 2025 alone. Data from DMI suggests Denmark experiences approximately 20 to 25 days of cloudbursts annually, a figure expected to increase by 25% to 70% due to rising temperatures.

Experts advise that when water penetrates materials such as insulation, felt, or linoleum, these items should be removed immediately rather than simply being dried, as standard ventilation and dehumidification often have limited effectiveness in these areas.
