Denmark faces smaller school cohorts due to declining birth rates

Denmark is facing demographic shifts as declining birth rates lead to smaller school cohorts. While approximately 62,200 children began kindergarten in the 2024/2025 school year, data from Danmarks Statistik indicates that future year groups are expected to be smaller following a drop in births from 63,473 in 2021 to 59,443 in 2025.

Despite the decreasing number of students, the financial burden of starting school remains significant for individual families. Costs for essential items such as school bags, stationery, sports clothing, and lunchboxes can amount to several thousand kroner. Financial experts note that grandparents are increasingly stepping in to assist with these expenses through monetary gifts or direct help with shopping.
