Denmark agricultural protests erupt over new nitrogen regulation law
Farmers in Denmark have staged demonstrations in Copenhagen to protest the passage of a new fertilization law (L5) by the Danish Parliament. The legislation aims to regulate nitrogen runoff and greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture and forestry to protect the marine environment from oxygen depletion.
Under the new regulations, farmers will face nitrogen emission limits starting in 2027 and will be required to convert portions of their land into natural areas. To mitigate impact, the government has granted a yearly exemption from these limits to vegetable producers. However, agricultural representatives warn that the law could force the sacrifice of large parts of the industry and threaten thousands of jobs.
The law has caused significant political friction within the Liberal Party (Venstre), with five members announcing they will vote against the measure despite the party line. In North Jutland, the agricultural sector is a major employer, accounting for more than one in six private jobs in municipalities outside of Aalborg.
