Denmark focuses on quantifying biodiversity impacts in land use and construction

In Denmark, new initiatives are addressing the environmental impact of land use and industrial production on biodiversity. Experts highlight the need for explicit trade-offs in large-scale landscape transformations, such as wetland and nature restoration projects, to ensure biodiversity goals are integrated into actual engineering rather than remaining mere ambitions.

Simultaneously, the brick industry is collaborating with consultancy firm Sweco on a pilot project to map the off-site biodiversity impact of products like bricks and mortar. This initiative, involving Danske Tegl, egernsund wienerberger, and Vejle Kalk- og Mørtelværk, aims to develop methods to quantify biodiversity footprints. This follows the industry's established ability to track carbon footprints, addressing the fact that current production methods are estimated to account for nearly 80 percent of the construction sector's biodiversity burden.
