U.S. President Donald Trump, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, and Greenlandic leader Jens-Frederik Nielsen signed a historic security agreement in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. The accord aims to bolster Arctic and North Atlantic security, addressing shifting geopolitical landscapes and increasing NATO engagement in the region.

Under the terms of the agreement, the United States is permitted to modernize and expand its operations at the Pituffik Space Base and establish new defense areas in Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig. The deal also includes the establishment of a missile defense system known as ‘Golden Dome’ to protect the American continent and the North Atlantic. Furthermore, the U.S. gains expanded military mobility, including rights for aircraft to fly over and land throughout Greenland, and access to Greenlandic territorial waters and the seabed.

The agreement explicitly reaffirms the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark and recognizes the right of Greenlanders to self-determination. It also stipulates that the security provisions remain applicable even if Greenland achieves independence. Additionally, the accord prohibits non-NATO states from establishing military installations or a persistent military presence on the island.
