Denmark homelessness numbers rise in Copenhagen

A new homelessness census conducted by VIVE indicates that the number of homeless individuals in Denmark has seen little national improvement, with significant increases noted in specific areas. In the former Capital Region, 2,679 people are currently experiencing homelessness, an increase of 74 compared to the previous count. Within Copenhagen specifically, the number of homeless individuals has risen by nearly 200.

Kirkens Korshær has criticized the findings, characterizing the lack of progress as a failure by politicians to address the root causes of the issue. The organization highlights that the shortage of affordable housing remains a primary driver of homelessness. To combat this, Kirkens Korshær is calling for a ‘Homelessness Reform 2.0,’ which includes a proposed housing guarantee to prevent individuals from becoming stuck in long-term homelessness due to a lack of available accommodations.
