Denmark hosts nationwide lung function testing for Lung Day
In observance of Lung Day on Thursday, September 24, various locations across Denmark are offering free lung function testing to encourage the early detection of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).
In Bornholm, testing will be available at the Rønne, Nexø, and Allinge pharmacies. In Jammerbugt Municipality, residents can visit the Kultur- & ErhvervsCenter Jammerbugt in Aabybro. Nationwide, approximately 125 locations are participating in these efforts to identify undiagnosed cases.
The Lung Association (Lungeforeningen) reports that while roughly 170,000 Danes are currently receiving treatment for COPD, as many as 230,000 others may be living with the disease without knowing it. Early diagnosis is critical because while lost lung function cannot be regained, early intervention through smoking cessation, physical activity, and medication can significantly improve quality of life and slow disease progression.
Denmark faces a high disease burden, with COPD being a leading cause of death. The association notes that two out of three Danes experiencing symptoms, such as shortness of breath, wheezing, or chronic coughing, fail to react to these warning signs in time.
