Denmark hosts talks on offshore asylum deportation centres

Ministers from Austria, Denmark, Germany, Greece, and the Netherlands are meeting in Copenhagen to discuss the establishment of asylum deportation centres in countries outside of Europe. The proposed “return hubs” aim to facilitate the deportation of failed asylum seekers, with Rwanda and Uganda identified as the primary potential hosts.

While proponents like Austria’s interior minister Gerhard Karner view the initiative as a concrete step toward implementing asylum procedures outside Europe, the plan faces significant opposition. Amnesty International has criticized the move, warning that these centres risk becoming “cruel black holes for human rights.” The organization expressed particular concern regarding the human rights records of Rwanda and Uganda, suggesting the policy is an attempt by the EU to offshore its migration responsibilities to the Global South.

Previous attempts to implement similar offshore deportation projects have faced criticism for high financial costs and lack of results. While the United States has entered similar agreements with over 35 countries, European nations are currently navigating bilateral negotiations to establish their own frameworks.
