Denmark identifies two new potential TBE risk areas

Two new areas in Denmark, Hals in North Jutland and Marielyst on Falster, have been identified as potential risk zones for Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE). The Statens Serum Institut (SSI) defines a TBE risk area once at least two suspected cases of infection have been recorded within a three-year period.

TBE is a viral infection transmitted to humans through tick bites. While the overall risk of infection remains low in Denmark, the disease can cause influenza-like symptoms and, in some instances, progress to encephalitis, particularly in adults and the elderly.

Existing known risk areas include Tisvilde Hegn, Tokkekøb Hegn, and Bornholm. Other potential risk areas currently include Egedal, Faxe, Guldborgsund – Marielyst, Odsherred, Randers, Vordingborg, and Aalborg Municipality (Hals).
