Denmark implements new coastal and marine nature restoration projects

Denmark is implementing new nature restoration projects to enhance marine and coastal biodiversity. In the Femern Bælt region, approximately 300,000 square meters of new land have been created near Rødbyhavn using seabed material excavated during the construction of the Femern Bælt tunnel. This 30-hectare area, currently described as a barren landscape, is being left to develop naturally. Project managers from Sund & Bælt intend to let plants, birds, and insects inhabit the area without human intervention, relying on existing seeds in the soil to drive vegetation growth.

In Copenhagen's Nordhavn district, WWF Verdensnaturfonden and By & Havn have established 63 artificial habitats to support marine life. This initiative includes 3D-printed reef modules created by StoneReefs and fish nurseries from EcoOcean. These structures are designed to utilize vertical surfaces to provide space for plants, fish, and other animals, including the critically endangered eel. The project involved local school students in the design process of the 3D-printed reefs.
