Denmark implements new waste management and sorting systems
Waste management systems in Denmark are undergoing significant technological and structural changes. In the Skanderborg and Odder municipalities, the waste company Renosyd has introduced a first-of-its-kind system in Denmark where garbage trucks weigh waste during collection. This data allows households to log in and view the exact weight of their waste, enabling them to track trends over time and compare their output with neighbors to encourage better consumption habits.
Simultaneously, in Holbæk Municipality, the utility company Fors is implementing new sorting rules effective October 1. The changes aim to optimize collection by providing more space for high-volume waste, such as plastic and food/drink cartons, which will now share a container. Metal will be moved to the glass container, and paper will be combined with cardboard. These materials will be separated later at processing plants. The transition also includes optimized collection frequencies and a shift toward using electric garbage trucks.
