Denmark Issues Health Alerts on Sunburn Risks and Unsafe Sunglasses
A recent report from Kræftens Bekæmpelse found that 50 % of Danes aged 15‑70 who vacationed within Denmark in the summer of 2025 suffered sunburns, raising concerns about increased skin‑cancer risk. Prevention director Mette Lolk Hanak urges the public to seek shade, wear hats and apply sunscreen when the UV index reaches 3 or higher, especially between 12 p.m. and 3 p.m.
In a separate health warning, ophthalmology professor Henrik Vorum cautions that many Danes purchase cheap sunglasses without the essential UV400 filter. A 2024 consumer survey showed 84 % of respondents are unaware of the UV400 marking, and 54 % do not consider it when buying eyewear. Without proper UV protection, dark lenses can actually let more UV radiation into the eye, increasing the risk of eye damage. Vorum recommends checking for the UV400 label, particularly for children and when spending time in strong sunlight.
Both experts stress that simple protective measures can prevent serious long‑term health effects linked to ultraviolet exposure.
