Denmark launches campaign on gambling-like features in video games

The Danish Gambling Authority, Spillemyndigheden, has launched a public awareness campaign titled “Casino in the Children’s Room” to alert parents to gambling-like mechanics in video games. The initiative focuses on features such as loot boxes, random reward systems, and in-game purchases that mirror traditional gambling experiences.

Anders Dorph, Director of Spillemyndigheden, stated that while discussions regarding digital media often center on screen time, it is equally vital to examine the specific content and mechanisms children encounter while gaming. The campaign aims to help parents recognize these psychological triggers and engage in meaningful discussions with their children about gaming risks.

To increase visibility, the regulator has installed temporary “Casino Kids” displays designed to look like casino shopfronts in Aarhus, Odense, and Copenhagen. Additionally, the authority is promoting the StyrPåSpillet.dk platform, which provides information and advice on gaming mechanics and the risks of gambling addiction. The campaign follows findings from Swedish regulators suggesting an association between purchasing loot boxes before age 15 and displaying risky gambling behaviors as adults.
