King Frederik X of Denmark officially inaugurated the Greensand project in the Port of Esbjerg, marking the launch of the first industrial-scale carbon capture and storage (CCS) facility in the European Union. The project is a collaborative effort between INEOS Energy, Harbour Energy, and the Danish North Sea Fund (Nordsøfonden).

In its initial commercial phase, the facility is designed to store up to 400,000 tonnes of CO2 annually. The CO2, primarily sourced from Danish biomethane plants, is liquefied and transported by truck to a dedicated terminal in Esbjerg. From there, the Carbon Destroyer 1—the EU's first purpose-built CO2 carrier—transports the gas to the Nini West reservoir, a depleted oil field located approximately 250 kilometers offshore. The CO2 is then injected into the seabed at a depth of roughly 1,800 meters.

The project is designed for significant expansion, with the potential to scale up to 4–8 million tonnes of CO2 storage per year as demand grows. While experts view the technology as a safe method for decarbonization, some environmental groups have expressed concerns that CCS might reduce the urgency for industries to cut emissions at their source.
