Denmark launches new mental health initiative for young adults
Danish regions have launched a new treatment initiative designed to provide faster access to mental health services for young people aged 18 to 24 suffering from mild to moderate anxiety and depression. Under the new scheme, which commenced on October 1, 2026, young people referred by a general practitioner are entitled to receive treatment within 30 days.
The responsibility for managing referrals, assessing needs, and securing appropriate care has shifted from the patients and their families to the regional healthcare system. Treatment will be provided through regional clinics, private psychologists, and the Center for Digital Psychiatry, offering a mix of digital, online, and in-person sessions. The initiative aims to provide a capacity of approximately 7,000 treatment courses annually, supported by an increase in regional psychologists and agreements with roughly 80 private clinics.
However, officials noted that the 30-day guarantee may not be met for everyone immediately. The regions are inheriting an existing waiting list of over 5,000 young people, meaning they must manage new patients while simultaneously working to reduce the backlog. Regional leaders stated that while a transition period is necessary to build capacity, the goal is to ensure young people receive help as quickly as possible.
