Denmark leads EU push for deportation centres abroad by 2027

The European Union is moving to establish its first deportation centres outside EU territory by the end of 2027, with the possibility of starting construction as early as next year. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen told the Financial Times that a "coalition of the willing" among several member states is already working with the European Commission to develop these external return hubs, which would process asylum seekers whose claims have been rejected.

Nineteen EU countries have publicly backed financing similar facilities, citing the model Italy operates in Albania as a pilot. The Commission says the necessary legislative framework is in place, while France’s president has voiced doubts and opposed the use of EU funds. Human‑rights groups warn the centres could become legal grey zones, lacking adequate protection for migrants. Denmark insists the hubs will respect international law and European human‑rights standards, though critics argue oversight will be limited.
