Denmark legal proceedings involve multiple violent assault and rape cases
Several high-profile criminal cases involving sexual violence and assault are moving through the Danish legal system.
In a significant ruling at Vestre Landsret, Wasim Essam Hajress had his sentence reduced from indefinite detention to two and a half years in prison. Hajress, who has been convicted of five rapes in Denmark since 2003, was also ordered deported with a lifelong entry ban. The decision has drawn sharp criticism from Dansk Folkeparti, which argued that criminal foreigners should be deported after their first conviction and that the reduced sentence is insufficient.
In Odense, a 34-year-old man faces charges for a series of violent assaults against his former partner during 2022 and 2023. The indictment includes allegations of strangulation, physical battery, and burning the victim with a cigarette holder. The prosecution is seeking imprisonment and deportation.
Separately, a 37-year-old foreign national is facing trial at the Court of Frederiksberg for multiple counts of rape and assault occurring in October 2024. The indictment describes a two-hour period of sustained violence and sexual assault against a woman in a Frederiksberg apartment.
