Denmark lifts shrimp fishing ban near Rømø and Lister Dyb

The Danish Ministry of Social Safety and Emergency Management has lifted a long-standing ban on shrimp fishing in several areas of the West Coast, including Lister Dyb, Rømø, and Mandø. Effective August 15, these locations will transition from prohibited zones to warning zones.

The ban, which had been in place since May 29, was originally implemented due to safety concerns regarding the potential presence of mines and other explosive objects on the seabed. Following a professional assessment by the Danish Emergency Management Agency and consultation with the Defense Command, authorities determined that the risks in these areas are no longer higher than in other existing warning zones.

While bottom-trawling and fishing are now permitted, the areas remain designated as warning zones, meaning users are still cautioned against anchoring and conducting seabed works. The decision has been met with relief by the Danish Fishermen's Association and local communities that rely on the industry, though some local fishermen in Rømø have expressed mixed feelings regarding the change.
