The Danish Ministry of Education has announced immediate emergency measures to combat artificial intelligence cheating in upper secondary schools. Under the new rules, students aged 16 to 19 will be required to verbally defend written assignments that were completed at home.

These measures specifically impact approximately 9,000 students enrolled in the country’s two-year Higher Preparatory Examination program. In addition to oral defenses, the ministry is urging schools to increase supervised writing on campus and implement technical safeguards, such as screen-monitoring tools and firewalls to restrict online access during exams.

Education Minister Magnus Heunicke stated that these actions are necessary to prevent AI from undermining students' critical thinking and academic abilities. While school leaders, teachers, and students have welcomed the swift response, they have also called for long-term solutions and a national AI strategy for the education sector, which the government is currently developing.
