Denmark Minister bans new pig production via executive order

The Danish Minister for Nature and Animal Welfare, Christian Rabjerg Madsen, has implemented a temporary ban on all new establishments and expansions of conventional pig production through an executive order. The Minister cited Section 34, subsection 1 of the Livestock Act as the legal basis, which allows for setting rules regarding the conditions under which permits for livestock production expansions may be granted.

Legal experts and professors have raised serious concerns regarding the legality of this intervention. Critics argue that using such broad provisions to implement a production halt via executive order, rather than through new legislation in the Folketinget, could set a precedent for unprecedented ministerial power and create significant instability for Danish businesses.
