Denmark to acquire long-range missiles from US and Norway

Denmark has announced agreements to purchase its first long-range precision missile systems to bolster national defense and NATO deterrence against Russian aggression. Defense Minister Jeppe Bruus confirmed the acquisition of two distinct systems: Joint Strike Missiles (JSM) from the Norwegian company Kongsberg Gruppen, designed for use with F-35 fighter jets, and Anthem cruise missiles from the US-based company Covenant, which are produced in Germany for land-based deployment.

Minister Bruus stated that the new capabilities would allow Denmark to strike targets “behind enemy lines” in the event of an attack, noting a “serious and deteriorating security situation.” While the government has not disclosed the specific number of missiles, the total contract value, or the expected delivery dates, the move follows a policy shift toward increased military spending prompted by the war in Ukraine.

The announcement drew a sharp rebuke from the Russian Embassy in Copenhagen. Russian Ambassador Vladimir Barbin criticized the decision, claiming Denmark is under the “dangerous illusion” that purchasing offensive weapons against a nuclear power enhances security. The embassy warned that Denmark’s missile policy seeks confrontation with Moscow and could lead to “inevitable catastrophic consequences.”
