Denmark pest control experts warn of potential rat surge
Pest control experts in Denmark are warning of a potential surge in rat infestations as the autumn and winter inspection periods approach. Claus Schultz, chairman of the Association for Pest Control Companies and technical manager at Rentokil, expressed concern that this year could see a peak in reports, noting that 2024 and 2025 saw significantly high numbers of reported cases.
To mitigate risks, the Danish Environmental Protection Agency (Miljøstyrelsen) and industry experts recommend several preventative measures. These include securing downpipes with mesh, ensuring ventilation channels and basement windows are properly sealed, and maintaining a distance of approximately one meter between building structures and vegetation to prevent rats from climbing onto roofs.
Additionally, residents are advised to manage waste properly by not leaving trash beside bins, avoiding overfilling containers, and ceasing bird feeding if an infestation occurs. Securing floor drains with screws is also recommended to prevent rats from lifting covers.
