Denmark plans North Sea artificial energy island
Denmark is developing an ambitious energy infrastructure project involving an artificial island in the North Sea. Designed to serve as a massive connection hub for offshore wind farms, the project aims to start with at least 3 gigawatts (GW) of wind capacity, with potential future expansions reaching up to 10 GW.
Despite its strategic importance for Denmark’s energy transition and the integration of the European power grid, the project has faced delays. These setbacks are attributed to high costs, rising interest rates, and challenges in defining the final construction model.
Clarifications regarding the scope of the initiative note that Denmark has not approved tenders for two new artificial islands in the North Sea. Instead, the country is pursuing two distinct ‘energy island’ projects: one involving an artificial island in the North Sea and another linked to the natural island of Bornholm in the Baltic Sea. The North Sea project remains subject to pending political and technical decisions.
